    • “Marsden's first and second balls were no-balled for throwing by Jeffries. His third bowled Sheraton. 15 or 16 more balls from Marsden were called ‘foul' by Jeffries who also no-balled Dearman twice. The Sheffield players then refused to continue and left the field. The Nottingham players then met Mr.Woolhouse at the Ram Inn and he agreed that his team would resume on condition that Marsden's usual strong bowling should not be objected to. Play resumed at 4pm but Marsden was again no-balled by Jeffries despite the previous assurances. In the second innings Rawlins ran a five but was then given out hit the ball twice by Jeffries. The Sheffield reporter insisted the decision was incorrect as he hit the ball a second time accidentally and was not trying to score or prevent a catch being taken. Jeffries again no-balled Marsden at the start of the second innings and the Sheffield team left the ground a second time. On leaving the field they were stoned and abused by the crowd. The Sheffield team were of a mind to return to Sheffield until the Nottingham players agreed that the umpires would be replaced. In fact, three players (Dawson, Smith and Fisher) did leave and were replaced by Davis (from Leicester), Petty (the umpire on the first three days) and Needham” (Sheffield Independent). The Nottingham Journal report differs in some respects saying that Sheffield ‘yielded the point' about Marsden's bowling
