New Zealand in Sri Lanka Nov/Dec 1992 - Tour Summary

New Zealand in Sri Lanka Nov-Dec 1992 : Summary

Before the tour started there was a terrorist bomb attack. Some
of the players ventured outside and were confronted by a harro-
wing scene: Gavin Larsen nearly stood on a scalp, and other hu-
man body parts were scattered around the scene. New Zealand Cri-
cket Chairman Peter McDermott flew to Sri Lanka to ensure the
tour continued. There may have been substantial repercussions for
Sri Lankan cricket had the tour been cancelled: the island had
had to wait for five years before another country toured af- ter
NZ's 1987 tour was curtailed following another bomb blast.

Coach Warren Lees (who lost his job to Geoff Howarth at the end
of the year - was this part of the reason?) and five players
(Larsen, Patel, Latham, Greatbatch and Watson) went home, repla-
ced by John Wright, Grant Bradburn, Michael Owens and Justin
Vaughan. The New Zealand side, already missing players such as
Cairns, Doull and Morrison to injury, was now weak on paper, and
certainly not in the right frame of mind to play international
sport.

The early fixtures were cancelled as the New Zealanders recovered
at a holiday resort. The modified itinerary involved 2 warm up
matches, followed by two tests and three one dayers.
