Young Manzoor Akhtar, who made his limited over debut against India on Sunday here, bowled extremely well, never allowing even veterans like Graeme Hick, Alec Stewart and Graham Thorpe, to play with ease, and finished with the enviable figures of 4 for 30 in 10 overs.
England, with two wins and a place in the final assured, never looked like the same team that beat India on day one and then the West Indies. Three of the Englishmen chipped in respectable scores, Stewart 47, Brown 41 and Hick 40. But no one stayed long enough. England still managed to reach a not too fragile a total.
England won the toss, for the first time in this contest and elected to bat first. Alistair Brown and Alec Stewart gave a good 71-run start to their side, but after that, except for a 42 run fifth wicket stand between Hicks and skipper Adam Holliaoke, no one faced the Pakistan spinning trio with confidence.
While the Pakistani bowlers bowled on target, the fielding today was not as agile and sharp as was seen in their crucial match against India. Pakistan captain Wasim Akram's decision to play all his three spinners, Saqlain, Mushtaq and Manzoor paid rich dividends. Although the wily Mushtaq was not among the wickets but he troubled the Englishmen throughout his spell conceding 43 runs in his 10 over quota.
Pakistan made two changes in the side that beat India on Sunday. Aamer sohail who was indisposed came in for Akhtar Sarfraz while Aqib Javed was dropped in favour of Mushtaq Ahmad.
