The Sri Lankan all-rounder, renowned around the world for his explosive batting, had Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh stumped by Romesh Kaluwitharana and top-scorer Robin Singh caught by substitute Mahela Jayawardene for 50 to give Sri Lanka their second win in the competition.

Jayasuriya finished with figures of 4 for 18 off 5.4 overs, but the 'Man-of-the-Match' award went to Sri Lanka vice-captain Aravinda de Silva, whose top score of 62 off 86 balls with five fours enabled Sri lanka to total 171 for 8 after being sent in by India.
De Silva completed his fiftieth half-century in one-day internationals and thus joined three others who had done so before him - Desmond Haynes (57 fifties), Mohammed Azharuddin (51) and Javed Miandad (50).
