Mervyn Dillon and Reon King, West Indies' young opening attack, limited India after they had chosen to bat to a meagre 50 for two in their first 15 overs. Dillon got the vital wickets of Sachin Tendulkar - dismissed by a superlative Carl Hooper catch at second slip - and Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin in successive overs. Saurav Ganguly, with 83, and Robin Singh, unbeaten on 73, provided the only real resistance.

Philo Wallace began West Indies' innings in typical blunderbuss fashion - carting Javegal Srinath's first ball for six - but it was left to first Shivnarine Chanderpaul, with an impressive 74, and Brian Lara, with an unbeaten 60 off 89 balls, to guide West Indies to victory by six wickets with three overs to spare.
