Cricket brings rain to Kandy

From S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen

Trevor Chesterfield who is presently in Sri Lanka to cover the cricket matches played by the South African 'A' team for the South African Independent Group of Newspapers and the South African Press Association has an interesting story to tell which in a way has some similarity with important cricket matches played in Kandy.

According to Mr. Chesterfield in South Africa whenever Eastern Province travels to the North to play at Centurion Park, it rains with hardly any play being possible. It must be recalled that Sri Lanka played their second Test match against South Africa at Centurion Park.

The similarity is likewise in Kandy too it rains whenever an important cricket match is organised. There is a popular saying up in the hill capital that for it to rain in the hill capital, a cricket match should be organised. It is left to be seen whether this hoodoo will raise its head again in the hill capital.
