Australia A defeated Ireland by the convincing margin of 170 runs in the 4th of the One Day matches at Downpatrick yesterday.

Australia A won the toss and batted first. Ireland got off to a good start and after 7 Overs had the visitors 30 for 3. However, from there things went downhill for the home side. Damien Martyn (98) and skipper Michael Di Venuto (52) added 109 for the 4th wicket and with contributions from all of the remaining batsmen Australia A reached 268 for 8 in their 50 Overs. Best of the Irish bowlers was Derek Heasley with 2 for 25.

Only Stephen Smyth of the Irish team with 50 made a significant contribution. The only other double figure scores were 17 from Steven Waugh (and he was dropped twice when 7) and 17 Extras. All the Australian bowlers took wickets with the best figures being those of Andrew Symonds with 4 for 13.

The Australians now lead 3-0 in the 5 match series. The final match takes place today in Beechgrove, Derry.
