Pakistan Register Morale-Boosting Victory
Col (Retd) Rafi Nasim - 15 March 2000
A lead of 404 was a gigantic figure for Sri Lanka to achieve. The pitch having not changed its character, was expected to continue its support to pace bowlers. Pakistan resumed with three wickets in hand but certainly not with the intention of prolonging the innings too far. Moin Khan and Waqar Younis, the overnight not outs, were playing with immense confidence. Trying to score the maximum possible runs in minimum time, both adopted an offensive posture. Attempting a big hit off Pushpakumara, Moin was out after a glorious innings of 70. Pakistan were 406 for 8. The 74-run 8th wicket stand was Pakistan's new record against Sri Lanka. Irfan Fazil came into bat but any addition to the total depended on Waqar Younis, who was following an offensive posture. By doing so it looked as if Pakistan had decided to end their innings and put the visitors into bat. In the process, Waqar lost his wicket after playing a fine knock of 39. Pakistan were all out for 421. Pushpakumara and Muralitharan shared four wickets each. [More]
