As part of its preparations for the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 tournament to be played in Buenos Aries, Argentina in late January 2009, the Hong Kong team traveled to Sri Lanka to undertake training and play a series of matches against teams from the Sri Lanakan Cricket Academy.
