Scenes spilled over into jubilation at a sun-baked Eglinton Flats ground, where Argentina clambered to a four-wicket success over Israel with only four deliveries remaining. The Division Two teams fought out a magnificent contest, and the advantage fluctuated consistently between them for most of the day. In the end, it was a 55-run partnership at a crucial time between Paul Ferguson (38*) and Martin Cortabarria (36) which proved the difference. Sophisticated batting from the stylish Gaston Arizaga (57) at the top of theorder was also invaluable, as was the bowling of Christ Tunon (4/41). Earlier,
Israel had punctuated an innings of fits-and-starts and occasionallydisappointing
running between the wickets with two excellent individual hands. Netanya CC
bastmen David Silver (58) and Adrian Vard (38*) played amajor role in lifting
their team to its eventual tally of 8/190. Despite a solid overall bowling performance,
it was nonetheless not quite enough to push their side over the finishing line
in front. France
and Israel had been expected to produce a close battle at Eglinton Flats and
neither let the pundits down. Albeit that France held the upperhand for most
of the day - particularly after they had disrupted a stubborn opening stand
of 58 runs between Yefeth Nagavkar (47) and Mahendra Jaiswar (29) at the start
of proceedings - it remained a close and exciting game. Inspired by a fine innings
from Simon Hewitt (52), the Frenchmen eventually claimed their victory by a
margin of three wickets and with an over left to spare. Their
captain, Isaac Massil (23), fought valiantly for his runs and Steven Shein (26*)
struck a few lustyblows but a score of 117/9 was not likely to seriously threaten
a sideregarded as one of the better combinations in Division Two. Albeit that
there was a serious hiccup in the middle stages of the chase as four wickets
tumbled for the addition of only 24 runs, the victory was duly achieved in comfortable
fashion. The contributor in chief was opener Rakesh Madhavan (41). ISRAEL v EAST & CENTRAL AFRICA, July 4 In
a game played at Ajax, East and Central Africa registered its maiden win of
the tournament with a 65-run triumph over Israel. There were four players who
loomed large in the victory: Virendra Kamania (45) and Arshad Dudhia (44) playing
a decisive role in lifting their team's total to a mark of 160/9 before Chad
Gomm (4/17) and Arif Ebrahim (4/15) put the skids under Israel as it tumbled
to a disappointing 91 all out in reply, with David Silver top scoring with 24.
It was another match marred by the arrival of rain and the conditions werealways
in favour of the bowlers. Uganda's preparations for their battle with the UAE, meanwhile, were rounded out with an emphatic seven wicket victory over Israel at Ajax. Israeli captain Isaac Massil (55*) batted beautifully with the tail to push his team's score to 153/9 but it was never likely to be sufficient to conquer the in-form Ugandans. The Africans rested key players and shuffled their batting order around but still
coasted to victory. Opener Charles Lwanga (47) was the mainstay of the innings and Frank Nsubuga (33) also played well, topping off an excellent exhibition
