Old West Indies Guard For One-Days

by Tony Cozier

March 25 1998

ST. JOHN'S The conservative West Indies selectors have stuck to their tried and trusted for the first two One-Day Internationals at Kensington Oval on Sunday and today week.

There are only two changes to the team that lost four of their six matches in their two previous tournaments, the Golden Jubilee Series in Pakistan and the Champions Trophy in Sharjah at the end of last year.

Roland Holder has once more proved expendable, his place taken by Clayton Lambert who joins Philo Wallace, Stuart Williams, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Junior Murray and Brian Lara as those who have previously opened the innings in One-Day Internationals.

Murray's predictable return, instead of David Williams, is the other alteration from the Pakistan-Sharjah side.

The familiar names of Phil Simmons and Stuart Williams appear again, while Rawl Lewis is reinstated as the leg-spinner instead of Dinanath Ramnarine to exercise the ploy of bowling outside leg-stump that he so effectively employed in the Champions Trophy in Sharjah last December.

There is no space for all-rounders rated One-Day specialists, batsmen who can bowl, or vice-versa, and fast, run-saving fielders, such as Laurie Williams, Keith Arthurton, Ottis Gibson and Neil McGarrell.

Courtney Walsh's experience superseded his obvious limitations in the field and the evidence that he is in need of a rest at the end of an exhausting Test series.

The 13 are: Brian Lara (captain), Carl Hooper (vice-captain), Philo Wallace, Clayton Lambert, Stuart Williams, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Phil Simmons, Junior Murray, Rawl Lewis, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Franklyn Rose and Mervyn Dillon.
