Bangladesh to face India in opener

DHAKA, Dec 29: Bangladesh will meet India in the opener of the three nations Independence Cup 1998 on Jan 10 at the renovated Dhaka Stadium. Bangladesh Cricket Board is organising the this three-nation tournament to commemorate the Silver Jubilee year of Independence of Bangladesh. This US $ 75,000 prize money tournament will first take place in a round robin league system with the top two teams qualifying for the best of three finals.

India will face Pakistan on Jan 11 and the hosts Bangladesh will take India in the last match of the round robin league on Jan 12. The first of the best of three finals will be played on Jan 14, the second on Jan 16 and the third on Jan 18. The tournament committee of Bangladesh Cricket Board has kept reserve day for each final due to rain or any other natural calamity.

There will be a total US 75,000 dollar prize money to be distributed among the teams and Man of the Match of each encounter. Each winner of the preliminary round will get US 2000 dollar and loser will obtain US 1000 dollar while the Man-of-the- Match will receive US 1,000 dollar. The winner of each final will fetch US 12,000 dollar and the loser will get US 5,000 dollar while the Man-of-the-Match will received US 2,500 dollars. The player of the tournament will be awarded US 4,500 dollar. The tournament committee also announced a three members umpires panel who will officiate the matches. They are Dough Cowie (New Zealand). Rudi Korerezen (South Africa) and Russell Tiffin (Zimbabwe).

Michael Henry Denness of the England will act as Match Referee.
