PAKISTAN v SRI LANKA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1997

At Sharjah, October 17. Sri Lanka won by eight wickets. Toss: Pakistan.

Pakistan's hopes of reaching the final were shattered when their inexperienced top six were dismissed for 82 by the 29th over. Only tailenders Mushtaq Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq made some amends, adding 52 for the seventh wicket. Ranatunga, who removed Basit Ali with his first ball, and Dharmasena were particularly economical, with combined figures of 20–4–37–5. A day earlier, the Sri Lankans had fallen just short of a target of 334; now they needed only 144 to go through, and cruised home in the 27th over when De Silva hit his second six off Saqlain.

Man of the Match: A. Ranatunga.
