Cork copes tactfully

DOMINIC CORK may not be famed for his diplomacy but the
Derbyshire all-rounder reacted with tact and restraint to his
omission from England's touring parties and to the selectors'
offer to help him ``work on his general game and his
temperament''.
The last part of this offer from David Graveney, the chairman
of selectors, will be interpreted as a reference to reports
that Cork's attitude in New Zealand last winter almost led to
him being sent home.
Cork, however, would say only: ``I'll be glad of any help in any
direction. If somebody is offering a way back into the
reckoning then I'll happily take it.''
The irony of Graveney's implied rebuke was that it came on a
day when Derbyshire appointed Cork their captain, having
announced last week that Phil DeFreitas would not keep the job
in 1998.
