Easy for vidyaratha

A quick-fire knock of 48 not out (5 sixes, 3 fours) by opener Daminda Ranaweera guided Vidyartha College to a ten-wicket victory over Sri Sumangala College, Kandy enabling them to enter the semi-finals of the Yasaratne Tennekoon Memorial Trophy Kandy schools limited over cricket tournament match organised by the Kandy Regional Cricket Board and played at Lake View grounds, Kandy yesterday.

Sri Sumangala College batting first were dismissed for 58 in the tenth over. Vidyaratha openers playing Carribean brand of cricket hit off the runs in just 4.2 ever. Today (Thursday) Vidyartha will take on St. Anthonys in the semi finals to be played at police grounds.

Scores:

Sri Sumangala College 58 all out in 10 overs (D.P. Tennakoon 13, G. Perera 20, R.L. Bandara 2 for 12, D.K. Ranaweera 2 for 12, S. W. Sanjeewa 2 for 8).

Vidyartha College 62 for no loss in 4.2 overs (Daminda Ranaweera 48 not out, S. Ranjith 07 not out).

Sports promoter Ranhotty dies

Kandy Sports Club's Treasurer Jayantha Ranhotty died on Monday night following a heart attack in Kandy. His funeral will take place today (Thursday) at 4 p.m. at the Mahaiyawa Cemetery.

The late Jayantha Ranhotty played cricket for Commercial Bank of Ceylon and was also a key official of Kandy District Cricket Association. He was also a long standing member of the Kandy Sports Club, having been its Treasurer and Committee Member in the early eighties. He was once again elected as Honorary Treasurer in 1997 and re-elected in 1998.

The late Jayantha Ranhotty has done a lot to promote sports in the hill capital in various capacities. His death is a big loss to Kandy Sports Club.

Sylvestrians win easily

A good all-round performance by Chanaka Wijesinghe (35 not out with 2 fours, 1 six) and 2 for 12 spearheaded St. Sylvester's College to a seven wicket win over Trinity College to enter the finals of the Yasaratne Tennakoon Memorial Trophy Kandy Schools limited over cricket tournament organised by Kandy Regional Cricket Board and played at Police grounds Kandy yesterday.

Batting first Trinity were dismissed for 75 and the Sylvestrians reached their target in 12.5 overs. Chanaka Wijesinghe finished off the match by lifting Kaushalya Weeraratne for a six.

Scores:

Trinity College 75 all out in 13 overs (C. Vanderkoon 15, R. Gamage 15, C. Wijesinghe 2 for 12, A. Perera 2 for 6, L. Gunadasa 2 for 14).

St. Sylvester's 78 for 3 in 12.5 overs (Chanaka Wijesinghe 35 not out, T. Z. K. Hajireen 14 not out, T. Liyanage 10 not out, C. Aluthge 2 for 11).

Antonians enter semi-finals

St. Anthony's College, Kandy entered the semi-finals by defeating Dharmaraja College by two runs in a thriller in their Yasaratne Tennekoon Memorial Trophy Kandy Schools limited over cricket tournament organised by Kandy Regional Cricket Board and played in Kandy on Tuesday.

Heavy rain on the morning of the match restricted the match to ten overs per side in keeping with the tournament rules. Rajans batting first hit up 97 for 3 in 10 overs and the Antonians replied with the identical score for the loss of six wickets. In the additional over which was bowled Rajans scored 10 runs and the Antonians pulled off victory in the last ball of the match.

On Thursday St. Anthony's will meet Vidyartha in the semi-finals at Police grounds, Kandy.

St. Anthony's College 97 for 6 in 10 overs (R. Wickremapala 13, K. Jayaratne 14, S. P. K. Basnayake 45 not out, R. Deen 12 not out, C. B. Kaduruwewa 2 for 14).

Dharmaraja College 97 for 3 in 10 overs (P. Senaviratne 39, A. S. Marapana 25, S. Wickremanayake 15).

Dharmaraja 10 for 0 in one over and St. Anthony's 12 for no loss in one over.
