INDIA v SOUTH AFRICA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Mumbai, November 6 (day/night). India won by 35 runs. Toss: India.

The toss was crucial. Tendulkar won it, and took advantage of the pitch while it was still good, leading the way for India with 67. But the scoring-rate slowed until one-time opener Jadeja arrived at No. 7 to thrash 43 not out from 42 balls, including successive sixes from off-spinner Symcox. India's 220 was worthier than it looked, and Tendulkar increased the pressure by keeping the field up, forcing South Africa to try to hit over the top on a pitch that got ever slower. At 96 for seven, the game was lost, though Richardson and Symcox momentarily threatened to recover it with a breezy stand of 88. It was too much to ask.

Man of the Match: A. Kumble. Man of the Series: A. A. Donald.
