National Cricket - Comilla crush Dhaka University

Unfancied Comilla led by veteran all-rounder Poplu romped into the quarterfinals when they handed Dhaka University a 17-run defeat in the 24th national cricket championship at the Sylhet Stadium yesterday.

In a rain-reduced 35-over-a-side match, Poplu scored a valuable 22 runs to help Comilla reach 109 and then went on to capture three wickets for 16 runs as DU were bundled out for 92.

Poplu was supported by his new ball partner Imdu and left arm tweaker Dickens. Imdu finished with three for 17 while Dickens conceded 15 runs for his two wickets.

Sohel of Dhaka University fought a lost cause with 44 while Litu 12 was the other notable run-getter.

Earlier, opting to bat first, Comilla struggled to 109 before they were all out in 33.4 overs with opener Sumon Barua hammering highest 30. Sohel shone with the cherry too capturing three for 16 while skipper Talha claimed two for 19.

Comilla will meet either Narayanganj or Chapainawabganj in the quarterfinal scheduled at the same venue on May 30.

COMILLA: 109 all out in 33.4 overs (Sumon 30, Poplu 22, Anis 10; Sohel 3/16, Talha 2/19)

DHAKA UNIVERSITY: 92 all out in 31.2 overs (Sohel 44, Mustadir 12; Poplu 3/16, Imdu 3/17, Dickens 2/15)

Result: Comilla won by 17 runs.
