Ducks - a dubious distinction

By M. Shoaib Ahmed
2 November 1998

On October 26, 1998, the fifth day of the third and final Test against Australia, Saleem Malik was dismissed without scoring for the second time in the Test when Colin Miller trapped him leg before. Earlier the former Pakistan captain made nought in the first innings at the hands of Stuart MacGill Malik became the 21st player to bag a 'pair' for the 22nd time for Pakistan.

The fastest pair in Test cricket was inflicted upon 'M.E.Z.' Ghazali of Pakistan by England at Old Trafford,

Manchester, on 24th July 1954. Exactly two hours elapsed between the start of his first innings at 4.14 p.m and his second dismissal at 6.14 p.m.

Despite being out for nought six times in his first 73 innings David Gower comfortably holds the record for the most consecutive Test innings without a duck. Between August 1982 and August 1990 he scored in each of his 116 innings.

Clyde Walcott was out for nought only once during his Test career. He played 74 innings for West Indies between January 1948 and March 1960, scoring 3,798 runs (@ 56.68) and making 15 centuries. His solitary duck occurred at Brisbane on 9 November 1951 when Ray Lindwall had him lbw in his first Test innings in Australia.

'King pairs'

Colin Wesely (in 1960 against England) and Thomas Ward, both from South Africa, achieved a 'king pair', being out first ball in both innings. Ward was the third victim of a hat-trick in both innings by the same bowler - Thomas Matthews of Australia, in Manchester in 1912 during Test cricket's triangular tournament. Ward, along with Australia's Bobby Peel (v England in Sydney 1894-950 and Pankaj Roy (India v England in Manchester 1952), makes the list of, those players who each had two ducks in one day.

In August-September 1992, Australian batsman Mark Waugh suffered a setback in his Test career when he was dismissed for two consecutive pairs in the second and third Tests of the 1992-93 series in Sri Lanka, at Colombo's Khetterama (now Premadesa) Stadium and Moratuwa, respectively. Only five other players have been dismissed for pairs in two consecutive Tests, all of them tail-enders and none anywhere near Mark Waugh's calibre as a batsman. His own countryman Bob Holland, who actually holds the world record for the most consecutive ducks (5) in Test cricket, was one. The others are England's Bobby Peel, South Africa's Robert Crisp, Australia's Wayne Clark and England's Pat Pocock. Others four ducks in consecutive Test innings are India's Pankaj Roy, New Zealand's Laurie Miller and Sri Lanka's Guy de Alwis. Each player's sequence included a single pair. Roy actually had five ducks in six innings. In the 1952 rubber in England, his seven innings fetched him scores of 19,0,35,0,0,0 and 0. Crisp playing for South Africa against Australia in 1935-36, was dismissed four times in the space of a mere five balls.
