Waqar, Ijaz, Zahid and Afridi out of Pindi Test

LAHORE, Sept 29: Pacemen Waqar Younis, Muhammad Zahid, middle-order batsman Ijaz Ahmad Senior and opener Shahid Afridi have been dropped as the national selection committee on Tuesday reduced the early list of 18 probables to 14 for the first cricket Test match against Australia.

The first Test is scheduled to be held at Rawalpindi Stadium, from Oct 1.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman said on Tuesday that final team would be announced in the morning on Oct 1.

The spokesman said that chief selector Wasim Bari faxed a 14-member list to the PCB. The final selection was upto the captain Aamir Sohail and coach Javed Miandad. The coach has inspected the Pindi stadium wicket on Monday.

Meanwhile, all the players have left here for Rawalpindi this evening after holding net practice at the Qadhafi Stadium in the morning.

Following are names of 14 probables who were retained for final selection of the Pakistan team for the first Test.

Captain Aamir Sohail, Saeed Anwar, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Salim Malik, Muhammad Wasim, Yousaf Yohanna, Moin Khan (wicketkeeper), Azhar Mahmood, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Aaqib Javed, Mushtaq Ahmad, Saqlain Mushtaq, Arshad Khan.

The axe is expected to be fell on Yousaf Youhana when the final team will be selected. Off-spinner Arshad Khan can find a place in the team only subjecting to the non-availability of Saqlain Mushtaq whose father was operated upon in London.
