Dawn Confusion over Pakistan's departure to Sharjah
Our Sports Reporter - 3 April 1999

KARACHI, April 2: Confusion reigned supreme over the departure of Salim Malik to Sharjah as the batsman was still in Lahore. The chairman of selectors Wasim Bari said a request for reinforcement had come from India. ``On the basis of that request, the selection committee picked up Salim Malik.

``As far as the selection committee is concerned, Salim Malik has to join the team in Sharjah,'' he said late Friday evening.

But Malik said from Lahore that till Friday he had not been told whether he is going to the desert city or not. ``I have got no instructions from the cricket board though a member of the selection committee told me that I have to go to Sharjah.''

The Sharjah Champions Trophy begins from April 7 and Pakistan play their first match in the double league tournament against India on the opening day. Wajahatullah Wasti, who is the 15th player, leaves on April 5.

Bari said when the request came, the team management had said Salim Malik would replace teenager Imran Nazir.

But sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said the final decision to fly Salim Malik to Sharjah would be taken on Saturday evening.
