ICC panel on Illegal Deliveries to meet

The ICC Advisory Panel on Illegal Deliveries will meet at Lord's on Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th August, ICC Chief Executive David Richards announced today.

"The Panel has been in existence since 1997 and has reviewed the bowling actions of a number of players over the past two years.

"Determining whether a player bowls illegally is a sensitive matter which requires a consistent approach.

"The Cricket Committee felt there would be benefit if members of the Panel could meet to discuss their views and to review the procedures which currently apply in International cricket in regard to calling a player.

"While Law 24.2 is explicit, there are occasions where umpires are uncertain whether a player has bowled or thrown a delivery. There is a process whereby an umpire can request the referee to obtain footage of a bowler which is then sent to the ICC office for distribution to the Panel. A conference call follows at which a decision is reached about the legitimacy of the action. If there is a problem the player is required to undertake remedial coaching and to demonstrate the problem has been corrected before he can return to International cricket.

"The Panel is chaired by Sir Clyde Walcott and comprises - Bob Simpson (Australia), Doug Insole and Nigel Plews (England), Kapil Dev (India), John Reid (New Zealand), Javed Burki (Pakistan), Brian Basson (South Africa), Ranjan Madugalle (Sri Lanka), Michael Holding (West Indies) and Andy Pycroft (Zimbabwe). Two of the three World Cup final umpires - Venkat and Steve Bucknor - will also attend, David Shepherd being on County duty.

"Recommendations arising from the meeting will be forwarded to Cricket Committee - Playing for its consideration", Mr. Richards added.
