The only two sets of father-and-son combinations to have taken 100 test wickets, Lance and Chris Cairns and Peter and Shaun Pollock, met in a historic occasion in Christchurch.

Both sets of combinations have had a huge impact on their respective test teams, New Zealand and South Africa, through their all-round abilities.

The Cairnses are one of six sets of father-and-son pairings to have played for New Zealand, while five such sets have represented South Africa.

``Both sets were in the same place at the same time,'' said Chris Cairns yesterday.

``It seemed too good an opportunity to pass up not getting together.''

``Peter Pollock was saying this sort of double may not happen again for a long time.''

Sons Chris and Shaun are already one up on their fathers -- apart from having taken more than 100 test wickets, they have also scored more than 1000 test runs.

Lance Cairns retired with 130 wickets from 43 tests in a career which stretched from 1973-74 to 1985-86.

Noted for his big-hitting exploits in the one-day arena, he scored 928 test runs at 16.28.

Son Chris, sidelined by a ruptured calf muscle, has played 35 tests and taken 109 wickets at 32.73.

He has scored 1635 runs with the bat at an average of 27.71.

Chris captured his 100th wicket in Sri Lanka last year -- allowing the Cairnses to beat the Pollocks to the family milestone.

Shaun claimed his 100th wicket in the Proteas' recent series against the West Indies.

Peter Pollock, who is chairman of the South African selectors, took 116 test wickets at 24.18 as a fast-medium bowler.

His career began against New Zealand in 1961-62 and was ended by South Africa's sporting isolation in 1970.

He made 607 runs at 21.67 from 28 tests.

Shaun has already overtaken Peter's wicket and run haul with 126 wickets from 32 matches since his debut in 1995.

He has scored 1212 runs at 31.07.

Lance never played against Peter, but he did play alongside Peter's brother, Graeme, several times.

Chris and Shaun have been pitted against each other at international and English county level.
