Australian umpires calling Murali was 'mischievous', says Titmus
Reggie Fernando in London - 25 March 1999

The man who mesmerises all those men that come before him - Mutthiah Muralitharan - was unofficially given the green light to carry on with his bowling when former England spinner Fred Titmus said last week that the decision of the Australian umpires to call Muralitharan last winter was 'mischievous'.

Titmus has been appointed as cricket's 'first watchdog' for checking the legitimacy of suspect bowling actions.

With the cricket World cup round the corner and the rage over allegations that Muralitharan has a suspect action the International Cricket Council (ICC) has asked Titmus to identify 'chuckers'.

Titmus, now almost 66 and rated as the second best off-spinner England has produced behind that legend Jim Laker, has already put a number of bowlers from various cricket playing nations to the test at the indoor nets at Lord's.

He also said that Murali who joins Lancashire soon after the World Cup has not had tests yet at Lord's.
