The 2000 Bruneian cricket season has arrived
Tony Munro - 20 February 2000

The 2000 Bruneian cricket season has arrived. Jenkins Dennis, the President of the Brunei National Cricket Association provides all the details:

"The new season in Brunei starts today (February 20). Six teams representing Menglait, Manggis, Cavaliers, Panaga, BSRC and Royal Brunei Yacht Club will compete for the MVJI League trophy.

The first round of matches for the league trophy will be completed in April. A six-a-side tournament is scheduled in the last week of April. The second round of matches will commence in May. Other important fixtures planned for the new season includes the Galfar Knockout tournament, Imex six-a-side and a 'Super Eight' competition.

In the 1999 cricket season, all domestic competitions were won by the Royal Brunei Yacht Club (RBYC). This year too, RBYC appears to be the strongest team. They have some of the best players in Brunei, which includes names like Renat (best all-rounder of 1999), Sanjiv Sabharwal and a few others.

Manggis and Menglait are expected to try to put a dent in the dominance of RBYC. Manggis' team has been strengthened after the return of their star players, Siddik and Shawreen Khan. They can also count on the experience of Manzur Ahmad (best batsman of the 1999 league tournament). Menglait, on the other hand, will be hoping for some good performances from Mujahid (last season's best bowler in the league), Imran, Asif and Munif.

Brunei Shell Recreation Club (BSRC) team, under the leadership of Don, has shown consistent improvement over the past couple of years. With each passing year, their young players seem to get more mature and experienced. It remains to be seen if they can spring a few surprises in the new season.

This year's Borneo Cup will be hosted by Brunei. The Borneo Cup is an annual tournament in which Brunei competes against the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. Sabah is the current Borneo Cup champion.

Elections for the new office-bearers of the Brunei National Cricket Association (PKNBD) were held in the first week of February, 2000. The following office -bearers were elected:

President - Mr. Jenkins Dennis
