The Numbers Game with Francis Payne

The rapid rise of James Franklin and a look at the New Zealand season

With players such as Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle, Roger Twose and Adam Parore missing from the side currently in Sharjah, the New Zealand one-day team has something of unusual look to it. A quite staggering feature of the side is that twenty-year-old rookie James Franklin now becomes one of the senior members of the team despite having just 12 appearances to his credit. His dozen caps are, amazingly, the third most in the team after Chris Harris and Craig McMillan.

Those two players have over 5000 one-day runs and almost 200 one-day wickets between them while the rest of the team have just 828 runs and 43 wickets between eleven players. Apart from Harris and McMillan, highest run scorer is Chris Nevin (178) while Daryl Tuffey (18) has the most wickets. Here is a summary of the New Zealand squad's career figures:
