The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed the Australian John Harmer as Head Coach of the England Women's Cricket Team.

John Harmer is a world-class cricket coach, and led the Australia women's cricket team to two World Cup finals in his eight years in charge of the squad from 1992-2000.

Under Harmer, Australia won the 1997 World Cup and were runners-up to New Zealand in New Zealand, in a thrilling World Cup Final last December. Harmer is the most successful coach in the women's game.

Speaking on his appointment from his Melbourne home, Harmer said: "I have seen a lot of England over the past eight years, and there are some very talented cricketers in and around the national side.

"I am delighted to have been offered the opportunity to coach England. I believe the development structures needed for a successful England team are now in place, and I'm looking forward to taking up the challenge."

Hugh Morris, ECB Performance Director said: "We are very pleased that John is to be the new England Women's Coach. He has a superb track record in the women's game and is widely acknowledged as one of the best cricket coaches around. His methods are innovative and proven, and we will all benefit from his experience."

This is the first time the England Women's Team will have a full-time coach and John will lead England, initially on a two-year contract. In line with the ECB National Strategy for Cricket launched last week, this is part of a long-term, planned approach, which aims to see England's women in the top two in the world by 2007. Together with other ECB initiatives in developing the women's game, this appointment will ensure that women's cricket continues to go from strength to strength.

England Captain Clare Connor said: "It's great news - we have all been very impressed by John's coaching when we have been at major tournaments and he will command immediate respect from the England Squad. He is a great motivator and a fantastic technician of the game - I look forward to working with him immensely."

John Harmer will take up the post following this summer's Ashes series. Jane Powell, Acting Head Coach and Coach of England's Development squads, will continue until John takes over in July and remain with the England Team as Assistant Coach to John thereafter.
