Pakistan women thump Netherlands by five wickets to wrap up the series
Mahmood Ahmad - 14 April 2001

Shaiza Khan bagged another five wickets and Mahewish Khan played a magnificent innings of 69 off 72 to balls to inspire Pakistan women to their 4th consecutive victory over Netherlands, taking an invincible 4-0 lead in the 7-match ODI series.

Today's victory was, however, the most comprehensive of all, with the home team vanquishing the Dutch with a margin of 5 wickets while chasing a challenging victory target of 205 for victory.

Shaiza, the captain of Pakistan, was again in excellent form, as she employed her leg breaks in an effective manner to account of 5 Dutch players for 38 runs in 10 overs. She now has 17 wickets in four matches, after her breathtaking performances of 3/26, 5/35, 4/33, respectively, in the first three outings.

The target of 205 looked a daunting one, yet Mahewish with her exquisite display of strokes made it look extremely comfortable, especially after adding 58 for the first wicket with Zehmurad Afzal (12 off 34 balls).

Mahewish's innings, which duly earned her the player of the match award, was sufficient to inspire Pakistan's middle order to knock off the remaining runs without much ado. Apart from her, Rabia Khan played a defiant knock of 19 (47 balls) to boost her team's efforts.

Sajjida Shah, the player of the match in the series opener, also played another useful knock in the middle of the innings. Coming to the crease at the fall of 4th wicket, she added 53 for the fifth wicket with Batool Fatima, taking Pakistan well in sight of victory. She was out lbw off Hartenhof for 27 off 51 balls.

Undeterred by her partner's departure, Batool kept getting runs until the target was reached on the first ball of the 48th over.

Earlier, Netherlands led by Salomons, displayed some very good batting skills to post a challenging 204 for 8. Salomons played all the bowlers with command as she found runs to all parts of the ground.

She added 82 valuable runs for the 5th wicket with C Rombaldo (25 off 57 balls, 1 fours) after the Dutch had lost 4 wickets for just 91. She was the 8th woman out in the 49th over, but not before posting a fine 89 against her name. Her innings of 101 balls carried 8 boundaries and the only six so far of the series from both sides.

Koster and Tanke also played well for the visitors getting 19 (41 balls, 2 fours) and 15 (27 balls, 2 fours), respectively, while adding 38 for the first wicket.

For Pakistan, apart from Shaiza with her five-wicket haul, Mahewish Khan took one wicket for 32 in 8 overs, whereas Khursheed Jabeen took one for 38 in 9.

The fourth match of the series will be played Monday, 16 April.
