UCB pledges R20 000 to Ellis Park tragedy fund
17 April 2001

The United Cricket Board of South Africa has pledged R20 000 towards the fund to assist the families of the victims of last Wednesday's football tragedy at Ellis Park Stadium, UCB Chief Executive Officer Gerald Majola announced on Tuesday.

"We would like to assist and show our support for the many people whose loved ones died while attending a sports event," Majola said.

Majola has also postponed his plans to travel to the West Indies so that he can attend the victims' funerals which are scheduled to take place on Saturday. He will now travel to the West Indies to be with the South African national team in early May.

South African national team manager Goolam Rajah said from Jamaica that the team would wear black armbands when they take the field against the West Indies in the fifth Test which starts in Kingston on Thursday.

"Once again we would like to offer our sincere condolences to the families of the people who died and the team will wear black armbands as a mark of respect," Rajah said.
