Muralitharan departs for Lancashire
CricInfo - 23 April 2001

Muttiah Muralitharan departed for England this morning where he will play for Lancashire in the CricInfo Championship. It will be the second time that Sri Lanka's star spinner will play for the club. In 1999 he wreaked havoc as he took 66 wickets in just six first class games.

Muralitharan will return to Sri Lanka to play against New Zealand and India in a triangular series in July before a three-match Test series against India in a in August.

The off spinner was given permission to play in England by the recently sacked Sri Lankan cricket board, but there has been some concern in Sri Lanka about him becoming physically and mentally exhausted. By the end of the Indian tour he will have played non-stop cricket for nine months.

He recently suffered a groin injury that he recovered from sufficiently to play against England, but which led to the Sri Lankan physio, Alex Kontouri, to state that his workload should be reduced if he were not to risk long-term injury.
