Yorkshire hold their nerve to beat Kent
Mark Pennell, Kent Messenger - 28 April 2001

Yorkshire pulled off a thrilling last-over victory over Kent after successfully chasing a target of 176 from 38 overs in Canterbury.

The Tykes' hero was all-rounder Gary Fellows - only playing in the game because of injuries to Gavin Hamilton and the ECB's desire to rest centrally contracted duo Darren Gough and Craig White - who saw them home with two balls to spare with an unbeaten 43.

Set to score at 4.6 an over, Yorkshire lost Michael Vaughan and Anthony McGrath early in the innings, but re-grouped through Simon Widdup (27) and Darren Lehmann (41) in a third wicket stand worth 61 in 12 overs.

The introduction of Min Patel accounted for both players in the space of two overs as Widdup chopped on and Lehmann worked across the line to be bowled.

White Rose skipper David Byas, dropped on 13 when Patel downed a skier running back from mid-on, added a valuable 23 before he went leg before to Saggers as the run rate just edged toward six an over.

Kent's chances were damaged when Saggers limped off with a shin injury, leaving Matthew Fleming and Patel to bowl at the death.

Debutant Michael Lumb fell to a run out three overs from the end, but Kent were unable to contain Fellows who hit his match-winning 43 from 50 balls.

Earlier, Kent's Ed Smith scored 103 not out to help Kent reach 318 in their second innings, a knock that might have saved the game until Lumb came on to remove Patel and Saggers with his second and ninth deliveries in first-class cricket.
