Rain intervenes to force draw at Cardiff
Richard Thomas, South Wales Evening Post - 28 April 2001

Glamorgan's rain-affected CricInfo County Championship division one clash against Somerset was abandoned as a draw this afternoon.

Heavy rain in the lunch interval and shortly afterwards forced umpires Peter Willey and Alan Whitehead to call off a contest that was always destined to be a tame draw. It left Somerset with 12 points and Glamorgan nine.

With the first day at Cardiff turning out to be a total wash-out, a positive result was always going to be an outside bet, and that's how it proved.

Somerset resumed their first innings this morning on 307-3 with bonus points the main priority.

And on a good batting wicket runs came easily this morning with Somerset reaching 400 - and maximum batting points - in the 16th over of the day.

On the way to 400 skipper Jamie Cox reached his 50 off 123 balls and with Burns also claiming a half-century.

To be fair to Glamorgan's bowlers and fielders they stuck at the task throughout the morning session and were rewarded with two wickets in the last 10 minutes before lunch.

Burns gave Robert Croft a simple return catch to end a fourth wicket stand worth 132 and in the next over Keith Parsons was trapped lbw by Alex Wharf for a duck.

Somerset went into lunch at 435-4, a lead of 82, with Cox on 94.

But after two inspections the umpires had no choice but call off the match at 2.30, leaving Cox stranded six runs short of a century.
