Darren Lehmann hit a rousing century to see Yorkshire to a five wicket victory over Derbyshire in the Benson and Hedges Cup at Headingley yesterday.

The Australian left-hander smacked 103 off 114 balls with 13 fours and a six and rarely played a false shot as Yorkshire chased a 201 target which they reached with 34 balls to spare.

Lehmann had sprinted to his century with two fours and a six off consecutive deliveries from Paul Aldred and it was while trying to hit the next ball over mid-wicket for the winning runs that he gave a catch to Luke Sutton.

Yorkshire had struggled at the start of their innings when Michael Vaughan was yorked in Derbyshire skipper Dominic Cork's first over and Cork struck again by having Gavin Hamilton caught in the slips.

Another edge, this time by Anthony McGrath, reduced Yorkshire to 36 for three but the complexion of the game changed quickly when the uncapped Gary Fellows joined Lehmann and the pair added an untroubled 118 in 25 overs.

Fellows reached 38, his highest score in the competition, before cutting Trevor Smith to Michael Di Venuto at backward point, but there was to be no faltering by Yorkshire because Lehmann then took complete control on his way to the man-of-the-match gold award.

His first 50 had used up 68 balls and contained six fours and a six but his second half-century required only 46 deliveries as he played shots to all parts of the ground.

Put in to bat, Derbyshire made solid early progress to 28 when Yorkshire's 19-year-old seamer Tom Baker claimed a wicket with his first legitimate ball on his debut for the county. After beginning with a wide, he bowled a swirling full toss to Steve Stubbings who was trapped lbw.

Rob Bailey (28), Mathew Dowman (40) and Di Venuto (36) all got out when appearing well set and Derbyshire promising start was rapidly undermined when they lost five wickets in 21 balls to slump to 175 for eight, Hamilton returning the best analysis of three for 56.
