Hampshire spinner Van der Gucht improving after scare
Vic Isaacs - 2 August 2001

Charles van der Gucht, the young Hampshire spinner, has suffered setbacks following his road accident last week.

At first it was thought that he had just sustained two broken legs, however it was discovered that he had a fat embolism on his lungs. Put into intensive care at St.Thomas' Hospital in London he had a six-and-a-half-hour operation to pin his leg and do skin grafts to protect the bone. He was permanently on a ventilator following surgery.

On Tuesday two pulmonary embolism's (blood clots) were discovered in his lungs, and he remains in intensive care.

David Newman, Hampshire's Physiotherapist, is in constant contact with Charlie's family, and learnt that he was sitting up and watching the Test match on television today.

It is likely that he will stay in intensive care until the weekend, but the good news is that, after a scare, he is now stable and improving slowly.
