Lehmann hits century but rain forces draw at Headingley
David Warner - 4 August 2001

Darren Lehmann lashed his fourth century of the season as CricInfo Championship leaders Yorkshire drew with title-holders Surrey at Headingley after rain had put a dampener on what could have been an exciting finish.

Yorkshire, who took eight points out of the game to Surrey's nine, remain well placed to finish top of Division One because they still enjoy a game in hand of their main rivals.

Chasing a 356 target, Yorkshire had reached 244 for two when the game came to a close without the extra half-hour being claimed but they could have had victory in their sights if 22 overs had not been lost to a downpour in the morning.

Lehmann joined Matthew Wood early on the final morning after Anthony McGrath had fallen lbw to Bicknell and the pair batted out the rest of the day in an unbroken third wicket stand of 190 in 65 overs.

Wood provided the anchor with a stubborn 85 from 277 deliveries with nine boundaries while Lehmann batted with his usual fluency for his 106, which came off 187 balls with 13 boundaries.

Lehmann is enjoying a purple patch even by his own incredibly high standards and in this game and the previous one against Lancashire at Headingley he has smashed 458 runs.

Martin Bicknell and Giddins both bowled well for Surrey for little reward but off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq did not trouble Yorkshire too much although he only conceded 46 runs off his 26 overs.

Bicknell was in charge of Surrey throughout the day as Adam Hollioake rested the side strain he aggravated earlier in the match.
