Dawn Waqar's threat irks officials
9 August 2001

Pakistan cricket captain Waqar Younis' outburst and threat on Tuesday has upset the administrators. According to highly placed sources, the top hierarchy of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) contacted manager Yawar Saeed and Waqar Younis to inquire about their point of views.

Waqar threatened Tuesday that he would quit if the selectors didn't give due consideration to his point of view in selection of the squads. The sources couldn't confirm if a showcause notice would be served to the Pakistan captain. But he added that if any disciplinary action was taken, it would be confined to four walls and under the roof.

"The PCB is determined to maintain the sanctity and dignity of the Pakistan cricket captain. His outcry, nevertheless, has not impressed the PCB," sources said. Meanwhile, manager of the Pakistan cricket team Yawar Saeed Wednesday said the four practice matches would be held on Aug 11, 14, 17 and 20.

He said the first match would be between the camp trainees while discarded Test players will compose teams to test the abilities of the camp probables squad in the remaining three matches. Yawar said Inzamam-ul-Haq and Abdur Razzaq would join the camp from Thursday. He said their appearance would raise the strength of the probables to 18. The training camp continued smoothly on the third day at the National Stadium. However, evening showers curtailed the nets session.
