Kadeer Ali hits ton to set up interesting last day
17 August 2001

England Under-19s amassed a record 620 for nine declared on the third day of the Second Test against the West Indies at Trent Bridge.

Birmingham-born Kadeer Ali was the hero as England took a first-innings lead of 204 with one day to go.

Lancashire's Kyle Hogg, who started the innings on a hat-trick, then picked up the vital wicket of in-form Devon Smith leg-before with an inswinger.

The tourists ended the day on 45-1, still needing 159 runs to make England bat again.

Kadeer Ali made 155 off 343 balls in just over seven hours and hit 19 fours as England progressed to their highest score in exactly 100 Under-19 Tests, beating the 563 for eight they scored against Zimbabwe at Northampton in 1997.

The Worcestershire player was dropped twice after he passed 100, but was eventually out when he pushed spinner Tonito Willett to silly point.

Opener Gary Pratt with 188 and Yorkshireman John Sadler, who hit 64 off 155 balls before hoisting four-wicket Jermaine Lawson to mid-wicket, were the only other batsmen to pass 50.
