HONG KONG v PAPUA NEW GUINEA at Nadi Muslim College

Papua New Guinea triumphed over Hong Kong in the first clash of these two teams in the inaugural ICC East Asia - Pacific Cricket Championships being staged in Nadi, Fiji. Hong Kong managed a respectable total of 204 after losing four wickets in 14 runs to be 7/129 in the 37th over. No. 6 batsman Neeraj Savalini top scored with 43 and the bottom order supported him admirably. Greg Baeau from Port Moresby Cricket Association was the star with the ball taking 5/37 off 9.5 overs. In reply, Papua New Guinea went on the attack and achieved their target in just 27.2 overs! Man of the match, Clive Elly was 71 not out off 55 balls and Frank Joseph made 63 from 48 balls. This result opens the door for Fiji who, together with Hong Kong, are yet to register a win from their only game - these two teams actually play each other tomorrow in an important match.

The winner of this tournament will qualify for the next ICC Under 19 World Cup in New Zealand in Jan/Feb 2002. There they will compete against all full member Test cricket nations, One Day International member, Kenya, and the four qualifiers from the other Regions of the International Cricket Council's world-wide Development Program - Africa, the Americas, Asia & Europe.
