FIJI v PAPUA NEW GUINEA at Nadi Muslim College

Papua New Guinea defeated Fiji by 10 wickets today to achieve three wins from its three matches thus far in the inaugural ICC East Asia - Pacific Under 19 Cricket Championships being staged in Nadi. Fiji won the toss and batted and was 5/8 in short time. Top scorer was Atunasia Bale who made 16 in the eventual total of 62. In a man of the match performance, Papua New Guinea opening bowler, Gimapau Keimelo, took 5/22 from 10 overs. He was ably supported by his fellow opener, Peter Arua (2/19 off 7 overs) and first-change, Greg Baeau (3/7 from five overs). The Papua New Guinea team then managed to achieve its target in just 4.5 overs without loss in an awesome display of big hitting. Mauru Dai scored an incredible 54no from just 16 deliveries including six 6's from the last seven balls he faced! Thanks to the win, Papua New Guinea is now assured of a spot in Saturday's final.

The winner of this tournament will qualify for the next ICC Under 19 World Cup in New Zealand in Jan/Feb 2002. There, they will compete against all 10 Test cricket nations, One Day International country, Kenya, and the four qualifiers from the other regions of the ICC's world-wide Development Program - Africa, Americas, Asia & Europe. Virtually certain finalists, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea, meet each other again tomorrow while Fiji will play Hong Kong on Friday in the last game of the preliminary rounds.
