Gilchrist to take over captaincy
aconroy - August 7, 2001

LONDON (Reuters)
Australia's vice-captain Adam Gilchrist is to lead the touring team in England while Steve Waugh is injured.

The decision was announced after Waugh tore a calf muscle as he set off for a run during Australia's second innings in the third Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on Saturday.

Waugh has been ruled out of the fourth Test starting on August 16 at Headingley, Leeds.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Gilchrist captained Australia on one previous occasion when Waugh was injured, leading the side to a five-wicket victory in the third Test against West Indies in Adelaide last December.

Ricky Ponting takes over as vice-captain, a job he has done in one-day internationals.

Australia retained the Ashes when they beat England by seven wickets at Trent Bridge to take a 3-0 winning lead in the five-Test series.
