Goodwin hammers Australian attack
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 8, 2001

HOVE (Reuters)
Australia's bowlers were hammered to all parts as Sussex amassed 147 without loss by lunch on the opening day of their three-day match, with Zimbabwean Murray Goodwin leading the way.

Winning the toss, stand-in captain Adam Gilchrist put the home side in on a pitch usually offering early assistance to the bowlers. The opening pair of Richard Montgomerie (63 not out) and Murray Goodwin (71 not out), however, dominated throughout the 33 overs before the break.

Goodwin's fifty came off 66 balls in 89 minutes and included eight fours, while Montgomerie hit his half-century off 73 balls in 91 minutes.

Montgomerie had one escape, dropped by Noffke at fine leg in the ninth over.

Quicks Brett Lee and Damien Fleming suffered in particular. Lee bowled nine overs for 58 while Fleming's nine cost 41.

The Sussex pair brought up the fifty in the ninth over and the hundred in the 20th.

Australia rested half their Test team, including frontline bowlers Glenn McGrath, JasonGillespie and Shane Warne.
