Rusty Kenyans outclassed
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 15, 2001

West Indies (311 for 4) beat Kenya (205) by 106 runs
An aggressive century by Chris Gayle followed up by five wickets from Colin Stuart guided the West Indies to a comfortable 106-run victory over Kenya in the opening game of the three–match series in Nairobi. The gulf between the sides was considerable and the Kenyans, who had not played a competitive one-day international since last September, were outplayed in every department. Man of the match Gayle shared an opening partnership of 174 with Daren Ganga and although Wavell Hinds and Carl Hooper were run out cheaply in quick succession, Shivnarine Chanderpaul's unbeaten 38 took the Windies past 300. Set a mammoth target, the Kenyans lost key wickets early and at one stage, when they were 63 for 6, a rout looked inevitable. But the West Indies relaxed, allowing the tail to add some face-savings runs. Kenya captain Maurice Odumbe said his batsmen were always struggling to chase such a big target. "I would have been comfortable with 250, but when the West Indies scored 311, I knew it was a tall order," he said. West Indies captain Carl Hooper was delighted with his team's performance. "This was a perfect start to the one-day series and we are looking forward to winning the remaining matches."
