Oh Dampometer - what went wrong?
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 23, 2001

As the final Test began under glowering Kennington skies, one thought was uppermost in viewers' minds: what had happened to Simon Hughes's Dampometer? We've had Hawkeye, we've had that funny little camera on the monorail, but this was the ultimate cricketing accessory. One day at Edgbaston it read 505, another day 473. What did it all mean? No-one knew. But it was yellow and looked like a Gameboy, so we all wanted one. Now, just three Tests later, the Dampometer has already been superseded. This morning Yozzer prodded the pitch with a bat. Technology moves on, and a nation mourns. Marcus Berkmann, author of Rain Men, was supposed to spend the morning writing a film script
