The Oval Test, Day 2
Friday, August 24, 2001 The day didn't go as we would have liked. We tried to attack with the new ball but then Butch dropped that catch early on which was a bit disappointing as it would have given us real momentum. Having said that I do think that we stuck at it very well on a hard day. Sometimes, like in the field at Headingley, I will hold my hand up and say that we didn't perform well but sometimes you just have to say all credit to the Australian batsmen – even Damien Martyn who came in late but played magnificently.

Steve Waugh is … hard work – I think they used to say beware of the limping Gordon Greenidge, now I think they'll have to say beware of the limping Steve Waugh. Though I have to admit that at times I was quite happy for him to be in because he couldn't really move – especially when he struggling through the 90s. But despite everything, including bouncing him, we still couldn't get him out.

When we went out there we had to bat positively and Marcus Trescothick was brilliant. But our problem is that the pitch is wearing and because of that Warne comes into it huge. That is probably the most disappointing thing – that we didn't get any wickets on a turning pitch.

But now we have to show courage and fight – it will be a huge battle. I had a chat at the start of the day and said that whatever we do we have to be positive. But you can't tell batsmen how to play, they have to take responsibility for themselves and Marcus got off to a flier.

We had a nightwatchman padded up from five overs from the close but you have to leave it up to the individual batsman whether he wants to go in or not. And when Athers was out, Butcher was off down the stairs before you could ask him.
