Atherton in figures
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 27, 2001

Atherton retires as England's fourth-highest Test runscorer, behind Graham Gooch (8900), David Gower (8231) and Geoff Boycott (8114). His record against Australia - average under 30, only one century - was ultimately disappointing, but his performances against most of the other countries stand up to scrutiny. New Zealand, with an average of 68 and four of his 16 centuries, were his favourite opposition. And unusually, Athers has a better record in the Caribbean cauldron than at home against West Indies.

Mr Consistency averaged 38.98 in 67 Tests at home, and 35.85 in 48 matches overseas.

And it didn't make much difference whether Atherton was captain or not. More pertinently, perhaps, was his effect on the result: in 31 Tests when he finished on the winning side, he averaged 40.19, and 51.06 in 40 draws. But in 44 matches lost he managed only 26.35.
