Young batsman Younis Khan has broken a Test record – in a match where he didn't actually make the starting line-up. Younis took four catches, all off Danish Kaneria, as a substitute in the second innings of the match against Bangladesh at Multan. Three subs had previously held three catches in an innings – Herbert Strudwick (England v Australia, Melbourne, 1903-04), Haroon Rashid (Pakistan v England, Headingley, 1982) and Gursharan Singh (India v West Indies, Ahmedabad, 1983-84). Younis Khan also equalled Gursharan's record of four substitute catches in the same match.
Only once before have five centuries been scored in the same Test innings – by Australia against West Indies at Kingston in 1954-55. Colin McDonald made 127, Neil Harvey 204, Keith Miller 109, Ron Archer 128 and Richie Benaud 121 as Australia ran up 758 for 8 declared (still the fifth-highest Test total) in the final Test. They won by an innings and took the series 3-0.
Taufeeq Umar is the eighth batsman to score a century on Test debut for Pakistan. The others are Khalid Ibadulla (166 v Australia, Karachi, 1964-65), Javed Miandad (163 v New Zealand, Lahore, 1976-77), Salim Malik (100* v Sri Lanka, Karachi, 1981-82), Mohammad Wasim (109* v New Zealand, Lahore, 1996-97), Ali Naqvi and Azhar Mahmood (115 and 128* v South Africa, Rawalpindi, 1997-98), and Younis Khan (107 v Sri Lanka, Rawalpindi, 1999-2000).
For the first time in Test history, eight players reached double figures in Bangladesh's first innings without any of them getting to 20.
This is the first Test to be played at the new Multan Cricket Stadium. Multan's previous Test, against West Indies in 1980-81, was played at the Ibn-e-Qasim Bagh Stadium. That match, which was drawn, became notorious when West Indian fast bowler Sylvester Clarke heaved a brick boundary-marker into the crowd, injuring a spectator, after he was pelted with oranges while fielding on the boundary.
