Lancashire refuse to release Crawley
Stephen Lamb - 7 December 2001

Lancashire have confirmed that they intend to keep John Crawley at Old Trafford next season, despite the former captain's request to be released from his contract.

A brief statement released by the club this morning reads: "At the meeting of the Club's General Committee on Monday December 3rd, it was a unanimous decision of that Committee not to grant John Crawley's request to be released from his contract."

Crawley asked Lancashire to release him with three years of his four-year contract remaining, after he was replaced as captain by Warren Hegg after a poor season at Old Trafford.

Crawley, 30, made his debut for Lancashire in 1990 and has earned 29 England caps. After the retirement of Michael Atherton he is the county's most senior player. He would be eligible for a benefit in 2003, which could raise as much as £350,000.
