Narsingh Deonarine to lead West Indian Under-19 team
Staff Reporter - 14 December 2001

Guyana Cricket Board president Chetram Singh announced that Guyana's Narsingh Deonarine would lead the West Indian squad to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand in January.

A left-handed middle-order bat and useful off-spinner, Deonarine is one of the four players with first-class experience in the 14-man squad. He was part of the Under-19 team that beat England in both the Test and one-day series during their tour earlier this year.

The 14 players were selected from on original 20-member squad named in early September; the players are scheduled to leave Barbados on January 10 for the tournament. The opening ceremony of the World Cup is slated for January 14, and the West Indies are bracketed in Group D with Australia, Scotland and Kenya.
