Brian Lara thanks Sri Lankan medical authorities
BCCSL - 16 December 2001

Injured West Indies batting star Brian Lara showered praise on the medical team at the Kandy General Hospital in Sri Lanka. Lara was rushed to hospital by ambulance after suffering a serious elbow injury during a mid-wicket collision while batting against Sri Lanka at the Asgiriya International Cricket Stadium on Saturday 15 December. Less than an hour after arrival at the hospital, Lara underwent a successful surgical procedure to reset his dislocated left elbow.

According to the West Indies Team Manager Ricky Skerritt, Lara wanted to thank as many of the hospital staff as he could for the high priority they placed on taking care of him during his seven hour stay. Skerritt said Sri Lanka should be proud of the speed and efficiency of the response by the medical team and the Kandy General Hospital staff to the emergency caused by Lara's unfortunate accident.

He asked that special mention be made of the following persons who helped to give Lara the best possible service in Kandy:

Dr Gamini Edirisinghe, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Dr Saliya Ilangasinghe, Resident Orthopaedic Surgeon
Dr Ravi Weerakoon, Consultant Anesthetist
Dr Nihal Perera, Consultant Anesthetist
Dr Senake Rajagamuwa, Medical Officer Orthopaedic
Dr Rohitha Hanangallaaarachchi, Medical Office Neurosurgery X-ray Department
Operation Theatre Department Staff
Class 1 Staff
