Elmwood School take Milo Trophy
Canterbury Cricket Association - 18 December 2001

The Milo Trophy-winning Elmwood School team

Elmwood School has taken out the 2001 Milo Trophy Final in a hard fought match against Oaklands today. The game was played at Oaklands School in front of a parochial home crowd. Over 200 people lined the boundary, most of whom were supporting the home side, however Elmwood had a solid army of supporters as well.

Winning the toss and batting first, Elmwood poured on the runs, ending up with 73. Alex Weatherhead was the top scorer with 16. The total was built on a series of five strong partnerships ranging between 13 and 16. The feature of the innings was running between the wickets and some powerful hitting. While Oaklands bowled straight, they were often punished for being too short.

In reply, Oaklands were always behind the required run rate of 7.3 an over. They ended up missing the target by 16 runs, scoring 57 off their 10 overs.

The top scorer for Oaklands was their player of the match Che McDougall with 14, who was well supported by the promising Kelsie Harris with 13. Oaklands struggled to deal with the pace and accuracy of the Elmwood bowlers, but they did manage to find the boundary on numerous occasions during the match. The Oaklands side struggled to work the ones and twos and this is what cost them in the end.

The attitude of both teams was exemplary and this is credit to both of the teams and their coaches. Both finalists were quick to thank the support they had gained from teachers and parents and acknowledge the enjoyment the competition had brought to them and their schools.
