Gatorade innovation introduced at Orange Boxing Day Test

Spectators and players alike will be a little shocked come the first drinks break of this year's Orange Boxing Day Test match between Australia and South Africa.

Emerging from the depths of the MCG and onto the playing arena will be a drinks cart resembling an enormous Gatorade bottle, complete with driver and player drinks.

The 4M x 2M Gatorade drinks cart is undoubtedly the most spectacular drinks cart ever to grace the turf of a Test venue in Australia and, in terms of uniqueness, rivals the now-famous Starship which delivered drinks during the 1996 World Cup.

The giant Gatorade bottle is built upon the frame of a battery-operated golf cart and, commencing today, becomes the official drinks cart at all international matches to be played in Australia this summer.

The Gatorade Drinks Cart is another innovation to be introduced to the game by Gatorade, a new sponsor of Australian cricket this summer.

In close association with the Australian Cricket Board, Gatorade has also introduced on-field Hydration Stations at all Test and one-day international venues, giving players the opportunity to constantly rehydrate during the hours of play.

The Gatorade Hydration Stations are placed at four separate points of the field, and ensure players can replace fluids constantly throughout the match and not just during the traditional drinks breaks.

Dehydration and heat stroke are major health issues faced by cricketers - cricket is generally played over an entire day, often in very warm and humid conditions and the protective gear that players wear increases the risk of heat stress. Fluid loss resulting from sweating can lead to dehydration that, in turn, affects a player's reaction time and overall performance.

Gatorade urges anyone who plays cricket to be well hydrated before they start a match and to drink both during and after the match. A sports drink like Gatorade contains electrolytes (salts) and carbohydrates. The electrolytes promote fluid retention and also encourage athletes to drink more fluid while the carbohydrates provide energy to working muscles.
